Fluticasone propionate nasal spray side effects in children
Flonase® (Fluticasone) nasal spray is allowed to be used by pediatric patients with age over 4 years old. However there is an indication that long term use of Flonase® can causes growth suppression in children.
Controlled Studies that involved 650 pediatric patients in the United States have shown that intranasal corticosteroids like fluticasone propionate nasal spray may cause growth suppression. However, the effects of intranasal corticosteroids on final adult height are still unknown since there are no further studies were conducted. There also no studies conducted to find out if patients that experience decrease in their growth velocity can catch up to normal people.
Therefore the Fluticasone propionate nasal spray side effects in children are actually still uncertain. However it is advisable that the use of Flonase® in children always accompanied by routine monitoring of the children growth velocity. Prolonged treatment should consider the risk of growth suppression and if it was needed the pediatric patients should be prescribed with the lowest dose that has been shown able to relieve the symptoms.
